Family vs Individual: when sharing actually saves

5 min read·Feb 14, 2026

Family plans are priced to be slightly cheaper than 2 individual subscriptions but always more expensive than 1. The exact breakeven is the most important number to know.

The breakeven for popular services (US, 2026)

  • Spotify Family ($16.99) ≥ 2 Individual plans ($23.98). Breakeven at 2 users.
  • Apple Music Family ($16.99) ≥ 2 Individual plans ($21.98). Breakeven at 2 users.
  • YouTube Premium Family ($22.99) ≥ 2 Individual plans ($27.98). Breakeven at 2 users.
  • Apple One Family ($25.95) saves over individual purchases only if you'd buy 3+ Apple services.

The hidden cost of sharing

Most family plans technically require all members to live at the same address. Spotify enforces this loosely; Netflix and YouTube TV enforce it aggressively. If you split with a friend across cities, expect prompts asking you to verify your household every few months — and budget for the possibility that the discount disappears.

Split the bill cleanly
Apps like Splitwise let everyone in a shared family plan see the cost and pay back automatically. Without it, the 'host' usually ends up subsidizing the others over time.
